How do I book an appointment?
Just ring us to discuss your needs. Our therapists each have different areas of interest and expertise and we will try to match you with the most suitable therapist. We can usually book a first appointment within a week to ten days. How many sessions will I need?
Many people ask how many sessions they would need (how long is a piece of string?) but that depends on the nature and depth of their issues and how committed they are to doing the work. It can hard work but CBT certainly is a good therapy for anxiety, depression, obsessional thinking and low self-esteem/confidence, trauma etc, if you really want to make those changes. Your therapist will discuss progress as the sessions continue.Does my workplace or GP need to know I have appointments?
Not unless you wish them to know. If the therapist has a concern over your safety they may ask to pass on those concerns to your GP in confidence.br />My relative / friend really needs help - can I book an appointment for them?
Although we understand the concern of family and friends we don't book appointments for third parties. By all means ring and have a chat on their behalf and feel free to pass on information and the contact numbers etc, but clients have to be ready and willing to engage in therapy and the choice to do so or not must always be theirs alone. Booking their own appointments is one way of putting the client in control of their own therapy and decisions. Will this change me?
Only if you want it to. Some people decide that they want to remain in the safety of the way they are and don't proceed after the first session. That's fine. You can be in control of any changes you make. In fact no-one can force you to make changes you don't want - you choose to change - or not - based on new information. Can you fix my problems?
No magic wands here! - but we can show you how you can help yourself! We cannot give a 'repair guarantee and warranty' as unfortunately the human mind is not as simple or predictable as a car repair, for instance. It all depends on the depth and extent of any issues, what arises during therapy, if the client is willing to work within and between sessions and their ability and willingness to change.Do I lie on a couch?
No! This is a practical form of therapy / training that involves the active participation of both parties. There are no hidden issues relating to control or power; these are brought out into the open. The therapist does not 'interpret' or provide answers but you work together to find the best answers for you. The therapist may offer information for you to take away and digest and you can challenge the therapist at any time - asking questions is a key part of the process. It is about collaborating to give you the skills and information to be in efficient control of your own thoughts, decisions and actions. How much will it cost?
This depends what it is you want to look at and how far you want to go. It is best to phone to discuss your individual needs. Can I have an after work appointment?
Some of our therapists have both daytime and evening appointments, although there is a heavy demand for the evenings. At present we do not offer weekend appointments.I think I'd be more comfortable with a male / female therapist - is this possible?
We have male and female therapists available, if you have a preference. If you have any queries or would like to book an initial interview please do get in contact - either by ringing the practice on 0151 709 2112 or emailing info@psychological-therapies-unit.co.uk
